Pretty much the same size...but I dunno.

I will say one advantage of the super tweeter...and maybe because I'm pretty sensitive to
the frequencies up there...but the only major battle without the tweeters was trying to
get enough sparkle from the GPA288H and I'm a little down on EQ...but even with it...
the sparkle and "spray" are not happening. Still the 288H has got more sparkle than the modded 808a's. I sense I'm in for a lot of work here...
But the problem was pushing the 288 too much. Now I can move the 288Hs volume back a little...and still keep the sparkle above.

Bass bins are actually are a pair of the original BASSMAXX prototypes,
somewhat similar in design to the ash6118? jbl horns. The woofers are jbl 2242Hs.

I tried the 30923 and the effects are noticable, I'd like to get fresh diaphragms on mine (288-8k) before passing judgement though.

I don't expect my 288's to compete with the extention of ribbons.
In my case I was going passive, and even the Aurum Cantus' didn't keep up with the 288's well enough to be used without attenuating the 288's.

Are`you saying the AC ribbon wasn't keeping up with the 288's on SPL or speed? I am going to atempt this high-end Sparklomania with Heil AMT's so would like to know if there is something about this kind of combination that is ill advised.

If you are using a passive crossover...in effect one amp for multiple drivers
then efficiency and power become VERY important.

I should have qualified my intended use by noting it will be active with multiple amplifiers and not assumed Gearfreak was using just one amp.

hey steve.. im running 4 way, with an ashly active crossover that has adjustable crossover slopes. allways fiddling with something, trying to blend the horns. voice clarity is important, so is the timing. im crossing out of my 292 driven 311-90's at about 6000hz into some 802-8t's on some 811's. between an eq and the extra amp you can acheive great results

I thought I was somewhat aware of the large format variations...I have not heard of a 292!
I do wonder what the large format sounds like pushed below 500hz...and mebbe someday i can get a good set for a decent price. Sometimes I feel like the poster boy who pays too much for altec gear.

I have heard 811horns with 806 and 807 drivers but never heard a setup where the highs were comparable to the effortlessness and wide coverage of ribbons or the ev t350s that my dad ran in his systems back in the good old days. Maybe I haven't experienced an altec solution set up properly...that's certainly possible.

Yes passively crossed over, yes SPL. IIRC I had to pad down the 288's substantially.
May play again with them if the ribbons end up sticking around.
